This year, Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park celebrates its 100th anniversary.

It was Chile’s first national park.

A century of protecting native forests, volcanoes, rivers, and one of the most iconic landscapes in northern Patagonia.

But reaching one hundred years also invites an important question:

How do we care for a place that more and more people want to experience?

Conservation requires public policy, scientific research, local communities, and sustainable funding.

But it also requires a new way of traveling.

Every decision matters: choosing responsible tour operators, staying on designated trails, minimizing your impact, and understanding that a national park is not just a scenic backdrop, but a living ecosystem.

At Pangue, we believe tourism can be part of the solution when it creates value for the region, strengthens local economies, and helps ensure these landscapes endure for future generations.

Because celebrating a park’s 100th anniversary is not only about looking back.

It’s about deciding what we want it to become over the next hundred years.

What if one of the best technologies to clean water had been working for thousands of years?

Wetlands are a good example.

Its plants, microorganisms and soils filter water naturally, retaining sediments and helping to improve its quality before it reaches rivers, lakes and estues.

Today, that same logic inspires the so-called artificial wetlands: systems designed to work with nature, not against it.

That difference summarizes very well what it means to regenerate.

Conserving protects what still exists.

Regenerating helps to recover what has already been altered.

In Pangue that idea also guides the way we design our experiences: we seek that each tour dialogues with the territory and contributes to continuing to be a living place for those who live there and for those who visit it.

💬 Did you know the artificial wetlands? Do you think we should be more inspired by the solutions offered by nature?

📌 Save this post if you are interested in discovering how nature continues to teach us new ways to take care of the water.

Chile has just received one of the most prestigious recognitions in international tourism.

It’s wonderful news. But it also raises an important question:

What are we going to do with that recognition?

Because a truly great destination isn’t the one that attracts the most visitors.

It’s the one that remains an extraordinary place 10, 20, or even 50 years from now.

That’s where regenerative tourism stops being a trend and becomes a way of traveling.

Travel by understanding the land.
Travel by respecting its natural rhythms.
Travel by leaving more value than you take away.

At Pangue, we believe success isn’t measured by the number of people who visit, but by the condition of the place after they leave.

If a forest, a trail, a local community, or a fjord is better because of tourism, then we’re on the right path.

Because an award can be won once.

Taking care of a place is a decision we make every single day.

💬 What does “traveling well” mean to you when you visit southern Chile?

Save this post if you believe the future of tourism depends on the way we choose to travel.

Muchas veces viajamos buscando lugares. Un bosque

Muchas veces viajamos buscando lugares.

Many times, we travel in search of places.

A forest.
A waterfall.
A beach.
A trail.

But a place is truly understood through the people who live there.

Through the knowledge passed down from one generation to the next, the crafts and traditions that remain part of everyday life, and the stories that explain why a place is the way it is.

That is living heritage.

It does not belong only to the past. It continues to evolve whenever this knowledge, these practices, and these ways of relating to the land remain alive within the community.

One of the greatest differences between visiting a place and truly understanding it may lie here: in the opportunity to meet the people who call it home.

Can you remember someone who changed the way you understood a place?

When planning a trip, it’s natural to start with the most well-known places. They’re the ones that appear first in travel guides, recommendations, and social media.

But the highlights reveal only part of a destination.

A small museum, a family-run business, a rural tourism experience, a conversation with someone who has lived in the same place their entire life, or a craft passed down through generations can transform the way we experience a place.

In the end, a destination is not defined only by its landscapes and attractions. It is also shaped by the people, traditions, history, and everyday life that give it its identity.

When a journey embraces these dimensions, tourism also has the opportunity to create meaningful connections and generate opportunities for a broader network of local people and businesses.
