Destino

Lake Todos los Santos

A hike among layers of ash, young forests, and landscapes sculpted by fire and water. This 11 km route runs along the southern slope of the Osorno volcano and the shore of Lake Todos los Santos, following an old cattle trail. At the end of the trail, a picnic by the lake and a private boat trip conclude a day marked by geology, scenic beauty, and the memory of the territory.

This journey is an invitation to walk on the living history of a landscape in constant transformation. The trail we follow was not designed for tourism: it was opened by animals and people crossing between lakes long before paved roads existed. Today, that same trail allows us to enter one of the least traveled sectors of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

Along the 11 km hike, we will see how geology manifests itself in every detail: volcanic ash that still covers the ground, roots that cross layers of slag, slopes marked by ancient mudslides. The route crosses regenerating coigüe forests, areas in regeneration after natural disturbances, and clearings where you can breathe the silence of the untouched.

It is not a technical trail, but it does require good physical condition: there are climbs, humidity, and irregular sections. There is also calm, beauty, and a lot of natural history. At each rest stop, we take the opportunity to read the landscape: we talk about how this volcanic system was formed, the glaciers that shaped the Lake Todos los Santos basin, and the people who have inhabited it.

The walk culminates in a small bay overlooking the Puntiagudo volcano. There, we share a snack with local products —designed to replenish energy without rushing the moment— before boarding a private boat that takes us back sailing through the emerald waters of the lake. The view from the water closes the experience as a final postcard: the landscape, now in reverse, seems to tell us another story.

A demanding but deeply rewarding experience, ideal for those who enjoy long walks, learning about the environment, and discovering the south from its less traveled routes. As always in this region, the weather can change; we recommend bringing appropriate clothing, a willingness to the unexpected, and openness to the real.
