Boat journey to Chaullín Island, with a walk through one of the last ancient arrayán forests in southern Chile. Meal prepared by local residents and, weather permitting, a ride in a traditional Chilote boat around the island.
Once you reach Calbuco, the boat leaves the coast, and within fifteen minutes the island comes into view.
After disembarking, you walk along earthen trails through an arrayán forest that has been growing by the sea for more than a thousand years. It is one of the last of its kind in the region. The trees intertwine, filtered light slips through the canopy, and the landscape shifts between forest and coast.
Along the way, signs of life appear: old houses, tracks in the ground, flightless steamer ducks, and birds moving through the trees.
You arrive at a shell-covered beach where the landscape changes with the light and weather. From there, when the sky is clear, you can see the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes.
At the end, you share a meal prepared by the island’s residents using local ingredients.
If conditions allow, you sail around the island in a traditional Chilote chalupa, a wooden sailboat built and sailed for generations by the boatbuilders of these fjords.
